What Is Dry Cleaning?
Despite the name, nothing about it is dry. Dry cleaning cleans garments in a liquid solvent instead of water, which is exactly what delicate and structured clothing needs. Here is how it works, from the team at Signature Cleaners in Doylestown.
Why Not Just Water?
Water swells natural fibers. That is fine for a t-shirt, but it shrinks wool, dulls silk, and warps the internal structure that gives a suit jacket its shape. A solvent cleans the fabric without soaking the fibers, so the garment keeps its size, drape, and finish. At Signature Cleaners we clean with eco-friendly solvents.
How the Process Works
- Inspection. Every garment is checked for fabric, construction, and stains.
- Stain treatment. Each mark is treated for what it is. Oil, wine, and ink all respond to different treatments.
- Cleaning. The garment is cleaned in solvent, gently.
- Finishing. Pressing and detailing return the piece to the shape it was made to hold.
What Should Be Dry Cleaned
Wool suits and coats, silk, structured dresses, ties, and anything with a lining or tailoring you want to keep. When a care label says dry clean only, the maker is telling you water will change the garment.
What About Everything Else?
Everyday laundry does not need solvent. That is what our wash and fold service is for, at $2.95 per pound. And bulky household pieces like comforters have their own service.
